Katrina Kits

What do you get when you cross a love for God and His people, a desire to help the poor, a stack of "someday fabric" waiting to be used, a love for socializing, and a daughter who needs home ec credit hours?

Katrina Kits.

God is bringing together all the necessary elements to one little address in Maryland to reach one big address in San Antonio. He gave me the eyes to see how to combine all of the above ingredients to minister in a small way to suffering saints and unbelievers alike who were washed out of their homes by Hurricane Katrina. The group that my family is reaching out to are currently living in an airplane hangar.

What must it feel like to eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, and do other functions of daily life in an impersonal, overcrowded, food-rationed microcosm?

So I asked God to show me what long-distance hospitality is. And He did. He put it on my heart to make Katrina Kits. These are 18x18 inch drawstring fabric bags filled with the essentials of going back and forth to the restroom for the morning shower routine. In each bag we are putting a toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, hair comb or brush, and nail clippers. (Not soap because we don't want the toothpaste to taste like soap after traveling. We will be sending soap separately.)

We will aslo put a little stuffed animal in the bag if someone gives an extra dollar. Kids will be delighted, and if an adult gets the bag, he or she would probably like to pass it on to a child.

A personal note card from each donor is also in the Katrina Kit.

Sarah and I learned from an older woman, Rose, yesterday just how to sew these things. No two bags are alike. They are very personal. Each one will be unique, even if many of the bags have similar fabric. Rose's stack plus mine produced florals, striped, Noah's ark, plaid, paisley, polka dotted, solid. Some are masculine, a couple are kiddie prints, but most so far are feminine looking.

I've asked people in our homeschool group if they'd like to help sew them together and stuff them with toiletres I've purchased. I will only be able to stuff them and sew them as the Lord provides material and means.

We will be going to neighbors and nursing homes to find people who want to show love to our hurting brothers and sisters, and to those who are yet God's enemies.

If you would like to send a Katrina Kit, please see me or just write back and request the number of kits you want to send.

Kits without stuffed animals are $6.50, Kits with stuffed animals are $7.50 each.

If you would like to pick out your bag, see me. If you don't, or can't, just let me know the following:

-how many Katrina Kits you want to send
-if you prefer to send to men, women, or children, or if it doesn't matter
-what you would like us to write on the enclosed card. ( Card is a 3x5 index card.)

Your donation includes postage.

Thanks so much in Jesus' Name!
Zoanna

Thank you for your initiative, Zo. I hope to get involved in some way. Jason is reviewing the options you sent via e-mail.

Also loved your 27 thing fling. We have storage areas that could really use a few things flung.

Hi Zoanna,

Just got your message on my blog - thank you so much.
I do want to help, my only concern is that I live in France, so I'm afraid the amount of bags I can make might be limited (shipping fees are high). I was considering making and donating things to online charity auctions like Crafters united.

What are your thoughts? What do you think would be most helpful?

Feel free to email me (you'll find a link to my email address in the left-hand column of my blog - Blogger doesn't seem to want me to include it here! Sorry for the duplicate comments...).

Thanks again for your message.
In Love,
Isabelle
